Indrani (Indy) J. Butany

Managing Director, Canada

Indrani (Indy) Butany leads at the intersection of diversity, innovation, and energy transformation. As Managing Director for Atrium Economics in Canada, Indy brings over two decades of leadership in regulated utilities, energy policy, and organizational transformation.

She has held several senior executive roles, including President and Chief Executive Officer of Elexicon Energy, Ontario’s fourth largest municipally owned local distribution company, where she became the first South Asian woman to lead a utility in Ontario.

During her tenure at Elexicon, Indy championed initiatives advancing reconciliation, equity, and sustainability, spearheading the completion of the company’s Reconciliation Action Plan, and forging partnerships with Indigenous-owned businesses.

A recognized thought leader in energy transition, regulatory innovation, and the path to net zero, she continues to shape dialogue across Canada’s energy sector as a Clean50 Award recipient and Wayne C. Fox Distinguished Alumni Award honouree from McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business.

Indy has served on Boards of Directors within the energy sector, including Electricity Canada, the Electrical Safety Authority, the Ontario Energy Association and the Electricity Distributors Association.  Indy currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation and the Steering Committee of Women in Energy Canada.  Indy is Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business.

She holds an MBA in Finance and an Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology from McMaster University, and the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

In her role with Atrium Economics, Indy leads its Canadian operations with a focus on regulatory strategy, innovation, and equitable energy policy, helping clients navigate Canada’s evolving energy landscape. She continues to work with First Nations to advance meaningful participation in the transition to a low carbon economy, aligning reconciliation with investment and effective public policy.
